TriWanaka Try a Tri – Thursday January 23rd

Give Tri a Try with TriWanaka

Try a Tri is a one off event giving you the chance to give triathlon a go in a fun, controlled and safe environment.

Held at the Wanaka Recreation Centre this event sponsored by Racers Edge, Torpedo 7 Wanaka and Outside Sports Wanaka, is aimed at juniors and adults who want to try something new and for athletes who are taking their first steps in a multisport event. It’s a pool swim, a mountain bike and run around the track.

The Event Distances

U7’s – 25m swim, 1km MTB, 400m run

U12’s – 50m swim, 2k MTB, 800m run

U16’s and Adults – 200m swim, 6km MTB, 2.4km run

It’s entry level, but if you are a swimmer and wish to jump into the older age group, that’s OK. Email us when you enter and will change the category.


If you enter online it’s FREE for all TriWanaka members and kids under 12 and just $5 for everyone else.

Triwanaka members please use your event discount code.

Online registration will close at 3pm on race day.

Race Briefings

Race Briefings are compulsory for all competitors and will take place 5 minutes prior to each respective start time at Event HQ Registration area.

Prize Giving

Prize giving will take place when the last competitor has finished the race. Approx 7.15 pm.

Certificates will only be awarded to all Junior U12’s for competing.

We have a number of spot prizes – details to be confirmed shortly. To be eligible for a spot prize you must be at the Prize Giving.

The Course

Try a Tri Course

Course Description


U 7’s – swim 2 laps of the learner pool in shallow water. Will be offered noodles if required and will have staff to support in pool.

U 12’s – swim in main pool. Start in deep end in the pool (not diving)- swim 2 lengths and exit deep end steps

U16’s and Adults – Start in deep end in the pool (not diving)- swim 8 lengths and exit deep end steps


All bikes will be set up outside the pool in category groups. Bikers collect bikes, walk to bike start and follow instructions from marshalls. Follow no overtaking zone on outside of courts to join main cycle track. You will need to count your laps.


Following directions from a race marshall , bikers hop off bike and turn right to transition, drop bikes and helmets and go to run. Run clockwise , same direction as bikers and exit finish. You will need to count your laps.
